Federal, Provincial, Territorial Ministers Agree to New Growing Forward Agreement

Federal, provincial and territorial Ministers of Agriculture have reached an agreement on a new Growing Forward framework to support innovation, market development and growth for the agriculture industry. The agreement in principle was reached at the FPT Ministers of Agriculture meetings held in Whitehorse, Yukon, September 12 to 14.

“The original Growing Forward Agreement has supported over 600 projects since 2009 and contributed to projects in innovation, land development, food safety, environmental stewardship, and market development throughout Newfoundland and Labrador,” said the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency. “We look forward to the positive impacts the Growing Forward 2 will bring to industry, and the opportunities for farmers and processors to improve their competitiveness and expand markets to support sustainable growth for the future.”

The new five-year Growing Forward 2 program will result in approximately $20 million to support the agriculture industry in the province. Governments will now move to complete bilateral agreements so that programs will be in place by April 1, 2013, when the current framework expires.

“Growing Forward 2 will give farmers continued support so they can further improve their businesses, and will give provinces greater flexibility to tailor programs to meet local needs,” Minister Kennedy added.
