Public Advisory: Prescribed Burn to be Conducted

The Department of Natural Resources advises that it will conduct a 146-hectare prescribed burn starting today (Tuesday, August 28), weather permitting, at Trout Pond. The site is located approximately seven kilometres northwest of the community of Hampden, and 16 kilometres north off Route 420 on the Clam Pond resource road in Forest Management District 16.

The prescribed burn is being conducted as part of the province’s silviculture management program to prepare the site for planting, and to eliminate the threat of adelgid, a naturally-occurring forest pest which limits tree growth. If weather and wind conditions are not favourable, the burn will proceed as soon as conditions permit.

In 2012, the Provincial Government will invest more than $9.5 million in silviculture in Newfoundland and Labrador. This will result in the improvement of more than 8,000 hectares and the planting of more than 10 million tree seedlings in the province.
