National Forest Week Contest Expanded to Include Grade 9 Students

To help raise awareness about the value of the forest industry, the Department of Natural Resources is inviting students to participate in province-wide contests in support of National Forest Week. These include a poster contest for Grade 5 students, and new this year, a video contest for Grade 9 students.

“Each year in support of National Forest Week, the department receives hundreds of illustrations from students that clearly show how much the forest means to them and to their families,” said the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency. “Adding the video component provides a different age group with an avenue to show us how they feel about the forest. We look forward to receiving creative and thoughtful submissions to both the poster and video contests.”

Six regional winners will be named, two in each category, from the eastern, western and Labrador regions of the province. Each regional winner will receive an Apple IPod. Regional poster contest winners will receive a framed copy of their poster. Twelve entries from the poster contest will be featured in the 2013 National Forestry Week calendar.

A provincial winner will be selected from the poster entries and from the video entries. Each provincial winner will receive an Apple iPad. Each winner’s class will be offered a field trip with forestry staff during National Forest Week and a new computer. Entries will be judged based on originality, creativity and adherence to the theme. Entries must be postmarked by June 15.

National Forest Week will take place September 22-29. The theme of the poster and video contest is Forests: All It Takes Is a Seed. For complete details, contest rules and contact information, please visit www.gov.nl.ca/nr/forestry/index.html#2
