Twillingate Marks Addition of New Firefighting Pumper Truck

The community of Twillingate turned out this weekend to mark the arrival of a new pumper truck for the area’s fire department. On behalf of the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services, the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and MHA for the Isles of Notre Dame, presented the vehicle keys to Twillingate Mayor Gordon Noseworthy and members of the municipal fire department Saturday, December 15.

“This new vehicle valued at $232,600 is one of 22 firefighting assets provided to communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Minister O’Brien. “These new vehicles, are modern, state-of-the-art machines and when combined with a well- trained fire department, can provide a greater level of safety for residents and business. I am proud of the advancements we are making with municipal fire departments and congratulate Twillingate on this new addition.”

The Twillingate vehicle was cost-shared 90/10 between the Provincial Government and the town. Other communities receiving vehicles include Harbour Grace, Pouch Cove, Burgeo, Bonavista, Norman’s Cove-Long Cove, Clarenville, Glovertown, Bay de Verde, Lourdes, Meadows, Labrador City, Bishop’s Falls, Glovertown, Musgrave Harbour, North West River, Trepassey, Baine Harbour, Embree, Ming’s Bight, Harbour Breton, and Port au Choix.

“This new pumper truck will be a great asset to the committed volunteers of the Twillingate Volunteer Fire Department and I am proud our government continues to provide support for such an integral community service,” said Minister Dalley. “These volunteers provide residents throughout this community with a great sense of comfort should an emergency arise. This new truck will help in protecting property and saving lives, for which we are all extremely grateful and proud.”

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity maintains $1.7 million in annual funding for firefighting infrastructure in addition to a $500,000 annual investment in firefighting equipment.

Since the creation of Fire and Emergency Services - Newfoundland and Labrador in 2007, the Provincial Government has contributed more than $14.2 million towards new firefighting vehicles in the province and in excess of $4 million for equipment, with a particular focus on personal protective equipment. Combined with the municipal contribution, more than $20 million in new equipment has been infused into community fire halls throughout the province.
