Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay Receives Significant Infrastructure Investment

The Dunderdale Government is investing over $1.6 million for infrastructure improvements for the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay. The funding is from the 2012-14 Multi-Year Capital Works Program. The total investment, including a contribution by the town, is $2.5 million.

“The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is a vibrant community which has much to offer its residents,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “I am pleased that we are announcing over $669,000 in provincial funding to renovate the town hall. This investment will be a great benefit to ensuring the sustainability of this community as it provides important municipal services for residents that will last into the future.”

In addition, over $535,000 has been earmarked for the construction of an access road and parking facility at the town’s recreation complex. Another $468,000 is being provided for renovations to the arena. The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is providing 30 per cent of the total project cost as allocated based on population.

“The town hall of Happy Valley-Goose Bay and the EJ Broomfield arena have always been places in our community that bring us together,” said Keith Russell, MHA for Lake Melville. “From town events to community gatherings, this investment by the Provincial Government will continue to help our community to come together.”

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity included $130 million over two years for municipal capital works projects. Since 2008, the Provincial Government has invested over $500 million in municipal capital works projects which has resulted in improved municipal infrastructure across the province. These projects have provided municipalities the opportunity to secure, develop and improve infrastructure for residents and support the long-term sustainability, growth and development of communities.

The Provincial Government has also maintained improved cost-shared funding ratios established in 2008 to benefit municipalities. For communities with populations below 3,000, the Provincial Government will continue to invest 90 per cent of the cost of new infrastructure with the municipality providing 10 per cent; 80 per cent of the cost will continue to be covered for populations between 3,000 and 7,000; and 70 per cent of the cost will continue to be covered for municipalities with populations over 7,000.
