Approximately $1.6 million Announced for Baie Verte-Springdale Infrastructure Work

Through an investment of approximately $1.6 million in the District of Baie Verte-Springdale, the Dunderdale Government continues to support enhanced infrastructure for municipalities. The funding is supported through the 2012 Municipal Capital Works Program and the 2012-14 Multi-Year Capital Works Program.

“Through the various municipal infrastructure funding programs, our government is making strategic improvements that benefit municipalities throughout the province,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “We are pleased to offer 90 per cent of the cost of these projects based on the population of Springdale, Little Bay, Middle Arm, Pacquet and King’s Point.”

Little Bay will receive funding to upgrade its septic system. Funding has been provided to upgrade roads in Middle Arm and King’s Point, and Pacquet will receive funding to improve its water system. All projects are offered through the Municipal Capital Works Program. Springdale will receive funding under the Multi-Year Capital Works Program to make a number of water, sewer and street improvements.

“I am pleased and thankful that our government continues to work with towns to address their infrastructure priorities, showing unwavering support to maintain vibrant, sustainable, rural communities,” said Kevin Pollard, MHA for Baie Verte - Springdale. “This is great news for these rural towns.”

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity included $130 million over two years for municipal capital works projects. Since 2008, the Provincial Government has invested over $500 million in municipal capital works projects which has resulted in improved municipal infrastructure across the province. These projects have provided municipalities the opportunity to secure, develop and improve infrastructure for residents and support the long-term sustainability of growth and development of communities.

The Provincial Government has also maintained improved cost-shared funding ratios established in 2008 to benefit municipalities. For communities with populations below 3,000, the Provincial Government will continue to invest 90 per cent of the cost of new infrastructure with the municipality providing 10 per cent; 80 per cent of the cost will continue to be covered for populations between 3,000 and 7,000; and 70 per cent of the cost will continue to be covered for municipalities with populations over 7,000.
