Infrastructure Boost for Massey Drive and Steady Brook

The communities of Massey Drive and Steady Brook will receive funding from the Provincial Government of over $347,000 for several infrastructure improvements in the towns.

“The 2012 Municipal Capital Works Program provides municipalities with important funding to help ensure communities remain vibrant and that they have the necessary services to offer their residents,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “I am pleased that the projects for Massey Drive and Steady Brook will provide enhancements that their residents will enjoy for years to come.”

Massey Drive will receive funding to install a section of sidewalk along Massey Drive as well as the installation of a pedestrian crossing light. Steady Brook will receive funding for engineering design work for a new municipal building which will house town equipment and a fire hall. Funding is cost-shared based on population, with the Provincial Government providing 90 per cent of the total project cost.

“These investments reflect government’s ongoing commitment to addressing the municipal infrastructure needs of these two vibrant towns,” said the Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Finance and MHA for Humber East. “From installing new sidewalks and pedestrian lights to planning for a new municipal building, this funding will benefit the residents of the respective communities for many years to come.”

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity included $130 million over two years for municipal capital works projects. Since 2008, the Provincial Government has invested over $500 million in municipal capital works projects which has resulted in improved municipal infrastructure across the province. These projects have provided municipalities the opportunity to secure, develop and improve infrastructure for residents and support the long-term sustainability of growth and development of communities.

The Provincial Government has also maintained improved cost-shared funding ratios established in 2008 to benefit municipalities. For communities with populations below 3,000, the Provincial Government will continue to invest 90 per cent of the cost of new infrastructure with the municipality providing 10 per cent; 80 per cent of the cost will continue to be covered for populations between 3,000 and 7,000; and 70 per cent of the cost will continue to be covered for municipalities with populations over 7,000.
