Input Sought on Potential Amendments to Southern Shore Highway Zoning Plan

Consultations will begin this week to consider changes to the Southern Shore Highway Protected Highway Zoning Plan. The Department of Municipal Affairs will examine if changes are necessary to recognize existing and proposed development in the Mobile and Tors Cove areas and areas north of Portugal Cove South.

“This consultation will allow anyone in this region to provide their comments on any future development along this portion of the Southern Shore Highway,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “It is important that the Provincial Government receives feedback because we need to balance the potential for future development with the need to ensure safety of people travelling on our highways.”

The Urban and Rural Planning Act, 2000 outlines the process to amend a Protected Road Zoning Plan which includes a consultation with the public. Advertisements will be placed in local newspapers today (Wednesday, November 14) providing details of the proposed amendment and asking for comments from the public.

Following feedback from the public, a public hearing, presided over by an independent commissioner will be held in the Tors Cove and Trepassey areas in late January 2013. Notice of the public hearings will also be advertised in advance.
