Public Advisory: Strong Wave and Pounding Surf Activity Anticipated for
West Coast Region

In an effort to ensure public safety, Fire and Emergency Services - Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL) is advising residents to be cautious around coastlines and waterways throughout the coming days.

Officials with Environment Canada are forecasting large wave and pounding surf activity for the entire west coast and Northern Peninsula beginning tomorrow (Saturday, November 10). The winds associated with this advisory will be northwest and could reach up to 85 kilometres an hour in the region. In particular, the west coast and Northern Peninsula areas could see wave activity reaching between five and eight metres in height. Shorelines may also experience pounding surf conditions which could impact the coastline and associated infrastructure.

FES-NL encourages residents to be mindful of these conditions throughout the weekend, and avoid coastal areas if at all possible. Conditions may be extremely hazardous and emergency management officials advise the public to use extreme caution. Snow squalls are also forecast for the region, which officials warn could severely impact visibility for people who risk journeying close to coastal areas.

Residents are reminded to follow the latest weather forecast for further warnings and advisories from weather experts and take measures to ensure personal safety is top priority.
