Firefighting Equipment Investments Continue in Baie Verte - Springdale

Provincial Government investments in firefighting equipment will see more than $15,000 in new gear placed in two fire departments in the District of Baie Verte - Springdale. The funding is made available through the Provincial Firefighting Equipment Assistance Program offered through Fire and Emergency Services - Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL).

“Protective equipment and firefighting gear, in addition to proper and regular training, help to protect the safety of firefighters throughout Newfoundland and Labrador,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services. “In partnership with our communities, the Provincial Government continues to place a priority on supporting fire protection services in every region. These investments help to improve firefighter safety and potentially save lives.”

King’s Point will receive lengths of hose for their firefighting efforts, while the Town of Pacquet will acquire two self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBA), two face-pieces, two air cylinders, and a firefighting ladder. Both communities will avail of the 90/10 cost-share ratio established in 2008 through the Provincial Government’s Municipal Capital Works Program.

“I am extremely pleased our government continues to support the exceptional work of our rural firefighters and municipal volunteers,” said Kevin Pollard, MHA for Baie Verte - Springdale. “In addition to a new tanker truck soon to arrive in Ming’s Bight, the communities of King’s Point and Pacquet will be better equipped to provide a valuable and important service to residents because of these strategic investments. I commend these firefighters for their dedication to service and am proud to support their efforts.”

Fire departments successful in receiving funding have applied for consideration with the support of their municipal councils and commit to cover their portion of the equipment through the established cost-share ratios.

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity maintains $1.7 million in annual funding for firefighting infrastructure in addition to a $500,000 annual investment in firefighting equipment.

Since the creation of FES-NL in 2007, the Provincial Government has contributed more than $14.2 million towards new firefighting vehicles and in excess of $4 million for equipment, with a particular focus on personal protective equipment. Combined with the municipal contribution, more than $20 million in new equipment has been provided to community fire halls throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
