Clocks Turn Back This Weekend

Newfoundland Standard Time returns this Sunday, November 4, at 2:00 a.m. and all residents of Newfoundland and Labrador are reminded to turn their clocks back one hour.

“I would encourage all residents to take more care while driving during evening rush-hour and to be especially mindful of pedestrian traffic as darkness will now occur earlier in the day,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services. “The time change is also a reminder to check smoke detectors and carbon monoxide monitors to ensure they are working properly. Residents should take this opportunity to review or prepare emergency and fire evacuation plans so that all family members are aware of what to do in the event of an emergency.”

Earlier this summer, the Provincial Government proclaimed the new Fire Protection Services Act, which requires residents in both new and existing homes to ensure there are working smoke alarms on all levels and in each sleeping area. Minister O’Brien reiterated the fact that this time of year provides the perfect opportunity to ensure these essential safety tools are in proper, working order.

The change in time will remain in effect until Sunday, March 10, 2013.
