Employment Support Project will Enhance Community Centre in St. Bride’s

Through an investment of $17,236, the Provincial Government has sponsored a project to support displaced workers affected by a permanent fish plant closure in the community of St. Bride’s.

“Our government is pleased to support workers who have been displaced as a result of a fish plant closure in their community,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “By working in partnership with these affected communities, displaced workers have the opportunity to avail of short-term employment to help them transition to new opportunities, while the community benefits from enhancements to infrastructure.”

Upgrades to the local community centre include leveling of the interior floor, installation of sub-floor as needed, installation of interior partitions, building of interior walls, and placement of insulation and sheeting over the ceiling.

“Through the work of the provincial Cabinet Committee on Fisheries Issues and the Provincial Government, we have identified areas where assistance is necessary for displaced workers and communities faced with fish plant closures,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture. “This assistance will allow individuals to gain new skills while undertaking meaningful projects.”

In response to recent fish plant closures, the Provincial Government has implemented a comprehensive suite of programming and extensive resources to support displaced workers. This suite of programs will lead to strategic investments while stabilizing and strengthening local economies.
“This project will benefit affected workers and at the same time enhance the community,” said the Honourable Felix Collins, Minister of Justice and Attorney General, and MHA for Placentia - St. Mary’s. “The community centre, when completed, will be a great asset to St. Bride’s and the Cape Shore.”

The Fish Plant Worker Employment Support Program is a provincially-funded, targeted program focused on creating short-term employment for workers from fish plants designated as permanently closed. The program provides workers with a maximum of one 14-week rotation (560 hours), less any insurable hours of employment they have already earned during the current year for the purpose of establishing Employment Insurance benefits. Workers and their communities will also avail of employment counselling and supports provided by the Department of Advanced Education and Skills, and the Department of Innovation, Business and Rural Development, respectively.
