Over $650,000 in Renovations and Upgrades to Terra Nova Communities

Several communities in the central region will benefit from funding allocated through the 2012 Municipal Capital Works Program. The Dunderdale Government is supporting renovations to the St. Brendan’s Community Centre and upgrades to sewer services in Glovertown and Sandringham through an investment of more than $650,000.

“We are pleased to support the towns of St. Brendan’s, Glovertown and Sandringham in enhancing municipal services,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “Since 2008, approximately $5.3 million has been invested in this area of the province alone. Our government remains committed to important and strategic investments in municipal infrastructure throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.”

St. Brendan’s will carry out renovations to the St. Brendan’s Community Centre which includes a new roof, as well as new doors, windows and siding. Glovertown will receive funding to complete waste water servicing, while Sandringham will begin the first phase of a public sewage collection and treatment system. Funding is cost-shared based on population, with the Provincial Government providing 90 per cent of the total project cost.

“These investments in rural community infrastructure are important and necessary to maintain and improve infrastructure that would otherwise be too expensive for small communities to undertake,” said Sandy Collins, MHA for Terra Nova. “Improvements to the community centre and sewage services will have a positive impact on the people in these communities.”

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity included $130 million over two years for municipal capital works projects throughout the province. Since 2008, the Provincial Government has invested over $500 million in municipal capital works projects which has resulted in improved municipal infrastructure across the province. These projects have provided municipalities the opportunity to secure, develop and improve infrastructure for residents and support the long-term sustainability of growth and development of communities throughout the province.

The Provincial Government has also maintained improved cost-shared funding ratios established in 2008 to benefit municipalities. For communities with populations below 3,000, the Provincial Government will continue to invest 90 per cent of the cost of new infrastructure with the municipality providing 10 per cent; 80 per cent of the cost will continue to be covered for populations between 3,000 and 7,000; and 70 per cent of the cost will continue to be covered for municipalities with populations over 7,000.
