New Municipal Infrastructure Announced for Bellevue Area

Over $600,000 will be invested by the Dunderdale Government in the Bellevue area for new municipal infrastructure under the 2012 Municipal Capital Works Program.

“Municipalities throughout the province work hard to provide reliable services for residents,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “The Municipal Capital Works Program and the generous cost-shared ratios in funding these projects enable communities to provide the necessary infrastructure, such as water and sewer service, and road work, in a more cost-effective way than would otherwise be possible.”

Arnold’s Cove will carry out road upgrades including storm sewer installation. Norman’s Cove-Long Cove will receive additional funding to complete a water and sewer project in the town. St. Bernard’s-Jacques Fontaine will install a chlorination system, while Grand Le Pierre will make improvements to the town’s water and sewer system. Funding is cost-shared based on population, with the Provincial Government providing 90 per cent of the total project cost.

“I am very pleased that over $600,000 will be spent in the Bellevue area again this year,” said Calvin Peach, MHA for Bellevue. “Water and sewer are essential services to the people throughout the area. This funding emphasizes our government’s commitment to water and wastewater infrastructure and confirms government’s support to improve the quality of services to the people of the area.”

Since 2008, the Provincial Government has invested approximately $6.6 million in the Bellevue area for municipal infrastructure.

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity included $130 million over two years for municipal capital works projects throughout the province. Since 2008, the Provincial Government has invested over $500 million in municipal capital works projects which has resulted in improved municipal infrastructure across the province. These projects have provided municipalities the opportunity to secure, develop and improve infrastructure for residents and support the long-term sustainability of growth and development of communities throughout the province.

The Provincial Government has also maintained improved cost-shared funding ratios established in 2008 to benefit municipalities. For communities with populations below 3,000, the Provincial Government will continue to invest 90 per cent of the cost of new infrastructure with the municipality providing 10 per cent; 80 per cent of the cost will continue to be covered for populations between 3,000 and 7,000; and 70 per cent of the cost will continue to be covered for municipalities with populations over 7,000.
