Over $1.3 Million Invested in Twillingate-Fogo Area

Over $1.3 million will be invested by the Dunderdale Government to upgrade municipal infrastructure in the towns of Change Islands, Fogo, Summerford and Twillingate as part of the 2012 Municipal Capital Works Program.

“We are pleased to support these significant projects for this region, with four towns receiving funding for a total of six projects,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “Projects range from water and sewer upgrades, to the enhancement of a community hall.”

Change Islands will receive funding to install a potable water dispensing unit. Work in Fogo will include sewer main installation to the Shorefast building; upgrades to a community hall in Stag Harbour, which will include the addition of a multi-purpose space and a kitchen; and a chlorine booster station. Summerford will replace a section of waterline and Twillingate will continue work on a new water booster pumping station and will install a new chlorination system. Funding is cost-shared based on population, with the Provincial Government providing 90 per cent of the total project cost.

“I am pleased that our government continues to work with communities to address their municipal infrastructure priorities,” said the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation and MHA for The Isles of Notre Dame. “This significant investment will make improvements for many residents in the region.”

Since 2008, the Provincial Government has invested over $4.8 million in The Isles of Notre Dame District for new municipal infrastructure.

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity included $130 million over two years for municipal capital works projects throughout the province. Since 2008, the Provincial Government has invested over $500 million in municipal capital works projects which has resulted in improved municipal infrastructure across the province. These projects have provided municipalities the opportunity to secure, develop and improve infrastructure for residents and support the long-term sustainability of growth and development of communities throughout the province.

The Provincial Government has also maintained improved cost-shared funding ratios established in 2008 to benefit municipalities. For communities with populations below 3,000, the Provincial Government will continue to invest 90 per cent of the cost of new infrastructure with the municipality providing 10 per cent; 80 per cent of the cost will continue to be covered for populations between 3,000 and 7,000; and 70 per cent of the cost will continue to be covered for municipalities with populations over 7,000.
