Infrastructure Projects Announced for Bonavista North and South

Approximately $972,000 in Provincial Government funding will be invested in the Bonavista north and south area of the province to improve municipal infrastructure.

“Improvements to water and waste water systems are a priority for our government through the 2012 Municipal Capital Works Program,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “This investment will result in needed improvements to town infrastructure that will benefit residents for years to come.”

Funding will be provided to the Town of Bonavista to refurbish a water tank. Carmanville residents will benefit from an extension to the water system, while Centreville-Wareham-Trinity will undertake upgrades to its chlorination system. The Town of Greenspond will complete a retrofit of its sewage lift station.

“These projects improve services to residents and demonstrate the overall commitment of government to delivering quality infrastructure to rural areas of the province,” said Eli Cross, MHA for Bonavista North. “Improved water and waste water management directly enhances the whole community. These projects are prioritized by the community and supported by government, testimony to cooperative relationships between municipalities and the Provincial Government.”

Funding is cost-shared based on population, with the Provincial Government providing 80 per cent of the total cost for the Town of Bonavista, and 90 per cent of the total cost for Carmanville, Centreville-Wareham-Trinity, and Greenspond.

“I am delighted that the Town of Bonavista will receive such significant funding that will improve an important part of the community’s infrastructure,” said Glen Little, MHA for Bonavista South. “Investing in water maintenance projects such as these, shows our government is committed to the betterment of rural Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity included $130 million over two years for municipal capital works projects throughout the province. Since 2008, the Provincial Government has invested over $500 million in Municipal Capital Works projects which has resulted in improved municipal infrastructure across the province. These projects have provided municipalities the opportunity to secure, develop and improve infrastructure for their residents and support the long-term sustainability of growth and development of communities throughout the province.

The Provincial Government has also maintained improved cost-shared funding ratios established in 2008 to benefit municipalities. For communities with populations below 3,000, the Provincial Government will continue to invest 90 per cent of the cost of new infrastructure with the municipality providing 10 per cent; 80 per cent of the cost will continue to be covered for populations between 3,000 and 7,000; and 70 per cent of the cost will continue to be covered for municipalities with populations over 7,000.
