$665,258 in Municipal Infrastructure Announced for Trinity - Bay de Verde

The Trinity-Bay de Verde area will receive a total of $665,258 in Provincial Government funding to make improvements to municipal infrastructure. The funding is part of the 2012 Municipal Capital Works Program.

“Improvements to water and waste water systems are a necessary and important investment in a community,” said Minister O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “However, sometimes these investments are costly and unattainable by the community or municipality alone. Through the Municipal Capital Works Program, our government is proud to make the necessary investments to allow communities to make needed improvements to benefit all residents.”

The Town of Salmon Cove will receive funding for an engineering design for significant improvements to its water and waste water system. The communities of Grates Cove and Hopeall will carry out improvements to their well water systems, while the Town of Heart’s Content will undertake improvements to its booster pumping station.

“I am delighted with today’s announcement that will help address issues with the water and waste water systems in the Trinity - Bay de Verde area,” said Charlene Johnson, Minister of Child Youth and Family Services and MHA for Trinity - Bay de Verde. “This funding is critical to these communities as it will not only improve municipal infrastructure, but also enhance services delivered to residents.”

Funding is cost-shared based on population, with each town or community providing 10 per cent of the total project cost.

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity included $130 million over two years for municipal capital works projects throughout the province. Since 2008, the Provincial Government has invested over $500 million in municipal capital works projects which has resulted in improved municipal infrastructure projects across the province. These projects have provided municipalities the opportunity to secure, develop and improve infrastructure for their residents and support the long-term sustainability of growth and development of communities.

The Provincial Government has also maintained improved cost-shared funding ratios established in 2008 to benefit municipalities. For communities with populations below 3,000, the Provincial Government will continue to invest 90 per cent of the cost of new infrastructure with the municipality providing 10 per cent; 80 per cent of the cost will continue to be covered for populations between 3,000 and 7,000; and 70 per cent of the cost will continue to be covered for municipalities with populations over 7,000.
