Over $300,000 Invested for a New Multi-Purpose Sports Complex for Burin

Over $300,000 in Municipal Capital Works funding will be invested this year to construct a new multi-purpose sports complex for the Town of Burin. The Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs, and the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education and MHA for Burin-Placentia West, made the announcement in Burin today.

“Our investment in this new sports complex is one way we are working to improve municipal infrastructure on the Burin Peninsula and throughout the entire province,” said Minister O’Brien. “These types of investments encourage participation in sporting events and will result in long-term social benefits for residents of Burin and surrounding areas.”

The Town of Burin will receive $333,634 in cost-shared funding to construct a new multi-purpose sports complex. The new complex will include a tennis court, high school basketball court, beach volleyball and three-lane, 200-metre oval track. The project will be cost shared, with the Provincial Government paying for 90 per cent of the cost of the project and the municipality paying the remaining 10 per cent. When calculating its investment, the Provincial Government includes the provincial portion of the HST and pays its applicable share of that cost.

“The construction of this new facility in the Town of Burin is a testimony to the continued commitment and support of this government,” said Minister Jackman.  “This facility will provide residents with the means to engage in various physical activities therefore assisting to improve the quality of life of those who avail of it.”

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity included $130 million over two years for municipal capital works projects throughout the province. Since 2008, the Provincial Government has invested over $500 million in Municipal Capital Works projects which has resulted in improved municipal infrastructure projects across the province. These projects have provided municipalities the opportunity to secure, develop and improve infrastructure for their residents and support the long-term sustainability of growth and development of communities throughout the province.
