Public Advisory: Evacuation Alert Extended to Select Labrador Communities
In the interest of public safety, the Department of Natural Resources and Fire and Emergency Services – Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL) have advised the communities of North West River and Sheshatshiu of the need to prepare evacuation procedures due to the threat of a forest fire burning in the area. The Provincial Fire Weather Index is currently at extreme levels in the Labrador region and residents are advised it is in their best interest to prepare for possible evacuation, in an effort to ensure their personal safety.
Forestry officials note the fire has grown significantly overnight and is currently burning approximately 30 kilometres north of these communities.
FES-NL is working with community officials to coordinate efforts to ensure residents can be evacuated to safe and secure locations, if necessary, while crews attempt to get the upper hand on the forest fire.
Residents are encouraged to make the necessary preparations at home and heed warnings and instructions from local emergency officials in the community, as the forest fire situation continues.
