Timelines for Provincial Government Response in Burton Winters Case
Accurate and Verified by RCMP

The Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services (FES-NL), today reiterated that the timelines provided regarding the role of Fire and Emergency Services – Newfoundland and Labrador in the search for Burton Winters are accurate and have been verified by the RCMP today in its released statement. In addition, phone records for FES-NL are verified by a record of call logs from Aliant.

“The RCMP has confirmed what I have stated from the beginning, the first call made to Fire and Emergency Services to respond to this case was made on the morning of January 30, 2012,” said Minister O’Brien. “It was after receiving this call that immediate action was taken to respond to the case. FES-NL had no contact regarding the Makkovik Search on January 29, 2012.

“This situation is very tragic and my heart goes out to Burton Winters family, friends and members of the community. However, it is important that accurate information is made available with respect to this unfortunate incident. I have stated on previous occasions that FES-NL has reviewed its response respecting the search for Burton Winters and I am satisfied that our policies and procedures were followed.”
