Provincial Government Reaffirms Support to Municipalities

The Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs, provided information and evidence in the House of Assembly today of the continued support the Provincial Government has offered to cities and towns throughout the province.

“We were pleased this year to increase our total allocation for Municipal Operating Grants from $17.8 million to $22.4 million,” said Minister O’Brien. “We take our responsibility to support our communities very seriously, and have demonstrated a strong record of investments in our municipalities.”

Further investments provided to support cities and towns throughout Newfoundland and Labrador include:

In addition, changes made to the cost-share ratio in 2008 have allowed many communities the ability to participate in capital works projects that would have been significantly challenging otherwise.

“We must continue to spend within our means and focus on sustainability as we plan for the future of Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Minister O’Brien. “The Provincial Government has proceeded in good faith in all the initiatives we move forward in partnership with our communities. We are committed to a new fiscal arrangement with stakeholders but we must take a measured and well-informed approach.”
