Burin Peninsula to Host Spring Fire and Emergency Services Training School

Continuing the Provincial Government’s commitment to provide emergency response training for members of the municipal sector, Fire and Emergency Services Training School will take place from May 26 to June 1 in Marystown.

“Our government is pleased to partner again with the Town of Marystown and the local fire department, as well as other local emergency responders to bring this training back to the Burin Peninsula,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services. “Municipal officials and emergency responders are our first line of defence when dangerous situations impact our communities. Proper training is important to ensure their personal safety as they ensure the safety of residents.”

The course schedule and associated information has been sent to communities throughout the province. The training opportunity, an initiative of Fire and Emergency Services – Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL), is offered at no cost to municipal officials and volunteers. These regional initiatives, which include more than 40 course options, are open to members of community councils, fire departments, public works, maintenance personnel and emergency response communities, as well as non-governmental organizations. Simultaneously, FES-NL will also offer 12 two-day training courses in various locations throughout the province in such areas as Defensive Firefighting, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), Marine Firefighting for Land-Based Firefighters, and Fire and Emergency Service Instructor for Defensive Firefighting.

“These regional training initiatives continue to strengthen the level of emergency response throughout our communities, and we are pleased to see the continued growth of this training school since it was first introduced in 2008,” said Minister O’Brien. “The Provincial Government is committed to assisting our communities to provide the best level of emergency services available. Appropriate training is a fundamental component of any emergency response plan.”

In addition to training, FES-NL will also conduct certification testing in a number of program areas which are accredited by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC). Firefighters who are successful in their testing will receive internationally recognized certification.

The Provincial Government is again offering a 50/50 cost-share arrangement for communities to assist in covering the expense of travel and accommodations during the educational sessions.
