Community Enhancement Employment Program to Receive Additional Funding

An additional $4.1 million has been allocated to the Community Enhancement Employment Program (CEEP) by the Provincial Government to further support current as well as potential new projects in rural areas of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Community leaders and organizations have indicated to us that there is a desire for further projects under the Community Enhancement Employment Program in some communities,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “By allocating this additional $4.1 million we are helping approximately 1,100 individuals qualify for employment insurance while also providing valuable community projects.”

The CEEP provides funding to community-based organizations which sponsor and manage enhancement projects and in June of 2011 the Provincial Government announced $4.5 million for the program. Eligible sponsors include towns, Inuit community governments, regional municipalities, local service districts, community and economic development organizations and other not-for-profit organizations.

“We recognize that some individuals may be facing challenges and this additional funding will be used in areas of the province with the greatest needs,” said Minister O’Brien. “Communities which have not had a project this year may be able to commence one, while others which have previously received funding may be eligible to hire additional employees.”

So far this year, CEEP has funded over 300 projects and employed approximately 1,200 individuals.
