Province Celebrates the Big Contributions of Small Businesses

Small businesses in Newfoundland and Labrador make important social and economic contributions to their communities and to the province. Their value is further highlighted today (Monday, October 15) as the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development marks the beginning of Small Business Week.

From October 14 to 20, Small Business Week provides an opportunity to celebrate the important function that entrepreneurs and small businesses play in our society. This year’s theme Aim High! Invest in Your Future, underscores how small businesses can become stronger, more competitive enterprises by investing in technology and skill development.

“Small businesses are the engine that is driving the economy of Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Minister Hutchings. “In all regions of the province, small businesses are creating new economic and employment opportunities, stronger communities and a more diverse provincial economy. As a former entrepreneur, I can fully appreciate the hard work, commitment and sacrifice it takes to be in business and the satisfaction and rewards that come with it.”

Small Business Week was launched nationally by the Business Development Bank of Canada in 1981. Over the course of the week, local chambers of commerce and economic development groups coordinate a range of business-oriented events including workshops, seminars and conferences that help create awareness of the value of small businesses.

As part of this year’s Small Business Week, Minister Hutchings proclaimed Saturday (October 20) as Small Business Saturday, which is an initiative coordinated by the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses.

“During this year’s Small Business Week, I also encourage seasoned entrepreneurs to reach and mentor future innovators and entrepreneurs,” said Minister Hutchings. “Introducing today’s youth to the opportunities that exist in our province is an integral investment in the social and economic development of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is an experience that will be equally rewarding for business owners and operators, as well as youth while helping contribute to the vibrancy of the province’s business.
