Labrador Preserves Exploring New Opportunities for Gourmet Spreads and Syrups

Labrador Preserves, with a $12,500 contribution from the Provincial Government, is undertaking a market analysis of opportunities within Newfoundland and Labrador for its gourmet spreads and syrups.

“It is an important exercise for any company to take the time and commit the resources to exploring new business opportunities,” said the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development. “There is a growing market for all natural products and I am confident that through this process the company will be able to identify opportunities to reach new customers.”

Labrador Preserves is a subsidiary of Forteau Food Processors, which for more than three decades has been an important economic contributor to southern Labrador. Over the years, the company has successfully diversified its product base to include a restaurant, catering services, and cottage rentals.

“Our success as a processor of wild, hand-picked berries grown in the province is due in part to the support we have received from the Provincial Government,” said Stelman Flynn, Founder and President, Labrador Preserves. “With the recent approval of this funding, we believe that we can look forward to achieving our marketing goals.”

The company processes bakeapples, patridgeberries, and blueberries into gourmet spreads and syrups. Its products are made from the finest of these wild berries that are grown on pristine, pollution-free barrens and marshes.

This initiative was funded through the Business and Market Development Program. This program, through Budget 2012: People and Prosperity, has $1 million available for investment. Administered by the Department of Innovation, Business and Rural Development, the program provides matching contributions to small businesses, enabling them to acquire new skills, meet industry standards, and expand their marketing reach to other jurisdictions.
