Community Radio in Bell Island Supported by Provincial Government
The Provincial Government is providing Radio Bell Island with $15,000 to establish a permanent community radio service on Bell Island.
“The creation of a community-led radio service on Bell Island is an exciting initiative,” said the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development. “In addition to celebrating the culture and heritage of Bell Island, the permanent radio service brings together residents of all ages to broadcast unique programming that features local personalities and musicians while promoting the island to visitors. I congratulate the volunteer effort that has made this possible and look forward to tuning in and listening to the programming.”
The radio service began as one week special event broadcasts in March 2011 and March 2012 and included musical performances, story telling, and local profiles. With this investment, Radio Bell Island will acquire the production and technical equipment necessary to offer the service permanently.
“Radio Bell Island will be a valuable tool to engage citizens off all ages and it will give them a mechanism to be informed on local issues or events while serving to educate and entertain,” said David Brazil, MHA for Conception Bay East - Bell Island.
This initiative was funded through the Regional/Sectoral Diversification Fund. This program, through Budget 2012: People and Prosperity, has $5 million available for investment. Administered by the Department of Innovation, Business and Rural Development, the program provides non-repayable contributions to economic development agencies for initiatives that address regional and sectoral development and diversification.
