Ministers Participate in Opening of Renovated Aviation Museum

To help mark the completion of renovations of North Atlantic Aviation Museum in Gander, the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development, today toured the facility. Minister Hutchings was accompanied by the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and MHA for Gander.

“The work that has gone into modernizing the North Atlantic Aviation Museum has been tremendous and I extend my congratulations to all those individuals who poured their time and energy into making it happen,” said Minister Hutchings. “As a government, we are pleased to have been able to partner and provide financial support to this valuable initiative. It is a facility that is important to residents as it celebrates the community’s rich aviation history and is sure to become an even greater tourism attraction in the region and result in new opportunities for local businesses.”

In August 2011, the Provincial Government, contributed $159,000 towards significant improvements to the North Atlantic Aviation Museum. With the investment, the museum was able to access professional resources to re-design and re-develop new and innovative interpretation displays.

“Gander’s historical connection with aviation is internationally-recognized,” said Minister O’Brien. “It is a connection that remains strong through present day. Work completed to modernize the museum is extremely impressive and I am confident that it will be enjoyed by a countless number of residents and visitors.”

Opened in 1996, the North Atlantic Aviation museum showcases Gander’s involvement in the development of aviation over the North Atlantic. It houses artifacts and presents important historical aviation moments in a chronological order beginning with the war years and creation of the airport, through to commercial flying and technological advances.

The North Atlantic Aviation Museum is located on the Gander Lake side of the Trans Canada Highway in Gander, between James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre and the Gander and Area Chamber of Commerce building.
