Best Boy Entertainment Sets the Stage for Further Growth

To support the development of new products and improve its competitiveness, Best Boy Entertainment will use a Provincial Government investment of $125,000, for staff training and marketing activities.

Best Boy Entertainment, a film, television, and interactive digital media company, produces television programs in a variety of genres including reality, travel, documentary, and children’s programming. The company employs 39 full-time staff at its high definition facilities in Mount Pearl and currently has three television series airing on the Pet Network: Pet ER, Mickey’s Farm, and The Horse, a six-part documentary. Another television series, Beyond Canada’s Borders, can be seen in over 170 countries through sales made to international broadcasters.

“Providing small businesses with the support needed for skills development increases their capacity to develop new products and pursue new market opportunities,” said the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development. “This support will enable Best Boy Entertainment to grow as a company and develop new, diverse and innovative programs and products. Ultimately, this will boost their competitive edge on the national and international stage.”

Best Boy Entertainment is now producing Math Fun 123, a package of mobile, interactive games with customizable 3D characters designed to teach math fundamentals to preschool children on Apple and Android tablets. The company will consult a number of experts in the gaming and early childhood development sectors to ensure its products meet market and educational demands.

“I am pleased that our government continues to invest in emerging businesses in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Steve Kent, MHA for Mount Pearl North. “Best Boy Entertainment continues to prove itself as a leader in the entertainment industry. I look forward to their continued success in our province and our country.”

Promotional and marketing activities that the company will undertake will include traditional media with particular emphasis on social media marketing in markets across Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

“Best Boy is a local entertainment company that has experienced exciting growth in recent years,” said Paul Lane, MHA for Mount Pearl South. “It is my pleasure to offer congratulations to Ed Martin and his highly skilled and talented team. This funding will help propel this groundbreaking organization to a new level of innovation, and will enhance its ability to reach further in its quest for superiority in this field.”

To further improve the company’s technical capacity for developing new projects, 10 employees will take part in variety of software training programs including 3D audio/visual production and computer coding.

“Best Boy has established itself as a leader in the film and entertainment industry,” said the Honourable Paul Davis, Minister of Service NL and MHA for Topsail. “The company is employing local talent and growing a thriving business. I am delighted our government is continuing to support this industry through this support.”

Previous investments from the Provincial Government, totalling over $60,000, have enabled the company to participate in industry trade shows and conferences and undertake employee development initiatives.

“This funding is of enormous benefit to our company as it allows us to enhance our skills and to advance our global competitiveness in the burgeoning digital media space,” said Ed Martin, Chief Executive Officer, Best Boy Entertainment. “Marketing is also key for expanding our global reach and critical to maximizing the return on investment for our company and our province.”

This initiative was funded through the Provincial Government’s Workplace Skills Enhancement Program and the Business and Market Development Program.
