Support Helps Expand Personal Care Facility in Springdale

The Provincial Government is providing a $325,000 term loan to Springdale Investments Inc. to expand the Springdale Retirement Centre. The extension to the personal care facility will increase its capacity and address the growing demand for senior’s care in the region.

“The expansion of this facility will assist in closing a gap in seniors’ care in the Springdale area,” said the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development. “When businesses, in any sector, expand and improve their operations, they create new opportunities, as well as stronger local economies and communities. This is not only an investment in rural infrastructure but an investment in our seniors. They have made, and continue to make, valuable contributions to Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Opened in 2006, with the assistance of a $250,000 term loan from the Provincial Government, Springdale Retirement Centre is a 63-room, level one and two personal care facility. This expansion will see the addition of 13 rooms, allowing the centre to accommodate up to 20 more residents and increase the number of full and part-time employees to 36.

“I am very pleased and proud of our government's investment in the Springdale Retirement Centre,” said Kevin Pollard, MHA for Baie Verte-Springdale. “It will go a long way, not only in expanding the facility, but also in providing quality care to seniors in this very modern health care facility.”

Springdale Investments Inc. is owned by Ron and Jean Sheppard. The Sheppards have over 30 years experience in the industry, previously operating personal care homes in Notre Dame, Porterville and Lewisporte.

“The Springdale Retirement Centre appreciates the support from the Department of Innovation, Business and Rural Development,” said Ron Sheppard, Owner, Springdale Retirement Centre. “The addition of 13 new rooms has enabled us to hire more staff to provide more people with the care and support they need and deserve. This will benefit our entire community.”

This initiative was funded through the Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise (SME) Fund, which through Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador, has nearly $13 million available for investment. Administered by the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, the fund is available for start-up, modernization, or expansion of a business venture in key growth sectors.
