Media Advisory: Minister to Participate in Opening Ceremonies of ROV Competition

The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development, will speak at the opening ceremonies of the Marine Advanced Technology Education Centre’s (MATE) 2012 Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) SCOUT competition tonight (Friday, March 30). The event is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. in the gymnasium at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University in St. John’s.

During the competition junior high students from throughout Newfoundland and Labrador will design, build and operate a ROV. Students will execute specified tasks defined by MATE in Monterey, California.

The ROV competition encourages students to develop science, technology, engineering, and math skills by showing them real-world applications of these subjects.
