Clarenville-based Business Zooming-in on New Opportunities

SubC Control, a Clarenville-based manufacturer of high-end underwater imaging solutions, is receiving $120,000 from the Provincial Government to strengthen its operations.

The announcement made today by the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development, was funded through Oceans of Opportunity – the Provincial Government’s ocean technology strategy – in partnership with Memorial University’s Genesis Centre.

“For small start-up companies to emerge and succeed in advanced technology sectors, support must be provided during the critical incubation stage,” said Minister Hutchings. “When entrepreneurs are focusing on developing and growing their company, resources for payroll and other operating expenses are often sparse. Recognizing these gaps exist, the Provincial Government implemented targeted programs to assist companies, such as SubC Control, during all phases of development.”

SubC Control designs, manufactures and assembles its cameras, lighting, batteries and software for use in underwater applications. The equipment is designed for use with remotely operated vehicles, autonomous underwater vehicles or as standalone installations, and have the ability to operate in the hazardous environments associated with the offshore energy and oceanographic research markets.

Since opening in 2010, the company has been aggressively marketing its product at trade shows and directly to potential clients and partners in Canada, Europe, United States, Africa, Asia and Australia.

“This is an example of the creative entrepreneurial talent that exists in rural Newfoundland and Labrador,” said the Honourable Ross Wiseman, MHA for Trinity North. “Once again, SubC Control is demonstrating that our companies can compete in international markets.”

With the investment, the company is better able to address the needs of its workforce. Staff in the positions of technologist and technical assistant will undertake training exercises, and meet the demands of developing, testing, and refining products and services.

“This funding allows SubC to invest in areas critical to meet the current demand for its products and services and positions the company for strong future growth and expansion,” said Ron Collier, Director of Sales & Marketing, SubC Control.

Headquartered in Clarenville, SubC also has an office located within the Genesis Centre of Memorial University. Located on the campus of Memorial University, the Genesis Centre is an incubation facility that assists local start-up technology companies in the early stages of development and growth. It provides business mentors and advisory boards, assistance with planning, access to university resources, and office and administrative resources.

“SubC Control is a very promising client of the Genesis Centre and has already made sales in six countries,” said Dave King, President and CEO of Genesis Group. “Chad Collett – the company’s president – has assembled a great team around him, which is a great asset to SubC Control. We are very pleased that the Genesis Centre has been able to provide incubation support and salary stipends to the company through the Centre’s partnership with the Department of Innovation, Business and Rural Development.”

The company is being supported through the Workplace Skills and Enhancement Program and Oceans of Opportunity: Newfoundland and Labrador’s Ocean Technology Strategy, a five-year, $28 million strategy designed to capitalize on opportunities and expand the local ocean technology sector.
