New Public Accounts Committee Takes Over

Newfoundland and Labrador’s new Public Accounts Committee held its first meeting today. The first order of business was to elect the Chair and Deputy Chair. The incoming Chair is St. Barbe MHA, Jim Bennett, and the Deputy Chair is Conception Bay East - Bell Island MHA, David Brazil.

Other committee members are Terra Nova MHA, Sandy Collins; Cape St. Francis MHA, Kevin Parsons; The Straits - White Bay North MHA Christopher Mitchelmore; Bonavista North MHA, Eli Cross; and Bay of Islands MHA, Eddie Joyce.

The committee expects to meet with the Auditor General for a briefing on his most recent report to the House of Assembly and then establish an agenda for issues to be reviewed and the timetable to hold meetings.

The role of the PAC is to hold government accountable for the stewardship of public assets and the spending of public funds (Standing Order 62 and the Green Report p. 5-44).
