$1.3 Million invested in Health Care for the Carbonear Region

Approximately $1.3 million will be invested in the Carbonear General Hospital, a core piece of health care infrastructure that serves the community and entire region. The funding, allocated in Budget 2012: People and Prosperity, is providing for new capital equipment, renovations and upgrades to help enhance services at this facility.

“Health care services are one of the essential building blocks for our communities, regions and our province,” said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services. “Over the past nine years, our government has focused on providing services and programming throughout Newfoundland and Labrador from large service centres to rural towns. Investing in new equipment, repairs and renovations is key to ensuring accessible health care options for the people of our province well into the future.”

The Carbonear General Hospital will receive $830,000 for new and ongoing renovation projects and upgrades. This funding will be used to:

“I am very pleased that we are able to assist in the Carbonear General Hospital’s continued expansion and improvement of services and equipment,” says the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Natural Resources and MHA for Carbonear-Harbour Grace. “As a government we recognize the importance of keeping services closer to home and these initiatives will help to improve the quality of health care for residents all over the area.”

The hospital will also benefit from $458,400 for new equipment including:

The Harbour Lodge Nursing Home will also receive $8,000 for a bed lift system.

“This new equipment, repairs and renovations for the Carbonear General Hospital demonstrate the ongoing commitment of the Provincial Government to high quality care for our patients, clients and residents in the Carbonear region,” said Vickie Kaminski, President and CEO of Eastern Health. “These investments enable Eastern Health to provide enhanced care and services to our patients, which aligns closely with our strategic priorities of improved access, quality and safety.”

Since 2004, the Carbonear General Hospital, Carbonear Interfaith and Harbour Lodge have benefited from $20 million for new capital equipment, repairs and renovations. In addition, $23 million was allocated in Budget 2012 for the continued construction of the Carbonear Long-term Care Facility which is expected to be completed in late 2014.
