Provincial Government Recognizes World Alzheimer’s Day

Since 1994, September 21 has been recognized as World Alzheimer’s Day, an event intended to raise awareness regarding Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia.

“Our government is committed to working with community partners to improve the lives of individuals and their families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and dementia,” said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services. “Our Budget 2012 investments, as well as our recently announced Long-Term Care and Community Support Services Strategy, demonstrate our focus on enhancing services and programming for residents with dementia throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity included a Provincial Government investment of $81.1 million for long-term care infrastructure in the province, including $1.6 million for a protective care residence in Bonavista. This facility will provide specialized care and accommodations for individuals with dementia. An additional $285,000 was allocated to implement the new Adult Protection Act which allows for the protection of adults who are incapable of caring for themselves properly, refuse or are unable to make decisions for care on their own behalf, and who are not currently receiving proper care and attention.

“Alzheimer’s disease affects 7,680 individuals in the province and we strive to increase awareness and advocate for early diagnosis and improved supports for individuals affected and their families,” said Shirley Lucas, Executive Director, Alzheimer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador. “Early diagnosis helps families plan for the future and maximizes the quality of life throughout the progression of the disease. On this World Alzheimer’s Day we encourage everyone to learn more about the disease and how you can make a difference in the lives of someone in your community to help us make Alzheimer’s disease a memory.”

This year, the Provincial Government provided $80,000 to the Alzheimer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador to support the First Link initiative. This program connects individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and provides an opportunity to access programs and services through their local Alzheimer Society branch.
