Seniors’ Organizations to Receive Age-Friendly Grant Funding

The Deer Lake Economic Committee and the Dunfield Park Community Centre in Corner Brook will benefit from funding through the Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Grants Program.

“Making communities age-friendly is a shared responsibility,” said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services and Minister Responsible for Aging and Seniors. “We are committed to putting supports in place so that seniors in Newfoundland and Labrador can continue to contribute to their communities. By partnering with seniors’ organizations for the delivery of innovative programs and services, we are ensuring that older people are able to take an active role.”

The Dunfield Park Community Centre in Corner Brook is receiving $7,000 for a healthy eating program for senior tenants of Newfoundland and Labrador Housing.

“I am delighted with this investment by the Provincial Government in the Age-Friendly Grant Program which will benefit seniors of the Dunfield Park area,” said Vaughn Granter, MHA for Humber West. “As a result of this initiative, these seniors will have the opportunity to participate in a healthy eating program which will help contribute to their overall good health and well-being.”

The Deer Lake Economic Development Committee is being provided $9,000 to enable a series of seniors’ gatherings to identify and catalogue documents and community artifacts that will culminate in a heritage fair.

The grant program was launched in 2010 as an initiative of the Provincial Healthy Aging Policy Framework. The Provincial Government is investing $160,000 in community-led initiatives through the program this year. Seven communities are each receiving $10,000, and 11 seniors’ organizations are receiving grants ranging from $4,000 to $10,000.
