Age-Friendly Grants to Benefit Communities in Labrador

Two organizations in Labrador will receive funding through the Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Grants Program. The Hopedale Inuit Community Government and the Sandwich Bay Seniors Club in Cartwright will receive funding to enhance age-friendly programs and services.

“The Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Grants Program helps our government to fulfill commitments made as part of the Provincial Healthy Aging Policy Framework,” said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services and the Minister Responsible for Aging and Seniors. “Our government is committed to investing in programs and services that help enhance the health and well-being of seniors in all areas of our province.”

The Sandwich Bay Seniors Club in Cartwright is receiving $7,200 to develop an intergenerational craft program for elders and youth in the community and to provide computer training for older people.

The Hopedale Inuit Community Government is being awarded $4,000 to fund hunting and wood gathering trips for elders and youth. The food and wood collected will be provided to seniors with limited incomes.

“These grants are supporting initiatives that focus on promoting social inclusion and encouraging older people to participate fully in their communities,” said Minister Sullivan. “Each of the funded projects in Cartwright and Hopedale will encourage seniors and youth to work together and promote learning opportunities for all.”

The Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Grants Program was launched in 2010 as an initiative of the Provincial Healthy Aging Policy Framework. The program provides funding to incorporated municipalities, Inuit community governments and reserves, as well as seniors’ organizations and retiree groups throughout the province.
