Age-Friendly Grants Continue to Benefit Province’s Seniors

The Town of Gambo and the Active Living for Older Adults group in Robert’s Arm are the latest recipients of funding through the Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Grants Program, through which the Provincial Government is investing a total of $160,000.

“Our government acknowledges the important contribution that seniors make to their communities,” said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services and the Minister Responsible for Aging and Seniors. “This program allows seniors’ organizations and municipalities to plan for an aging population and to work to develop age friendly communities.”

The Town of Gambo is receiving $10,000 to conduct a community assessment under the leadership of an age-friendly committee. This committee will evaluate community resources, assets, and challenges; identify community champions; and, develop an action plan for the town.

“This funding is welcome and will assist the Town of Gambo to determine how to best meet the needs of seniors in their community,” said Sandy Collins, MHA for Terra Nova. “It is important to develop an age-friendly plan for seniors specific to their needs.”

The Active Living for Older Adults group in Robert’s Arm is receiving $10,000 to enhance existing age-friendly physical and social activities for older adults in Robert’s Arm, Port Anson, and Miles Cove.

“This grant will go a long way in assisting the Active Living for Older Adults group to develop programming for seniors in the area,” said Ray Hunter, MHA for Grand Falls-Windsor - Green Bay South. “I am pleased that the Department of Health and Community Services continues to assist seniors to live healthy and active lives.”

The grants program was launched in 2010 as an initiative of the Provincial Healthy Aging Policy Framework. The program provides funding to incorporated municipalities, Inuit community governments and reserves, as well as seniors’ organizations and retiree groups throughout the province. This year, seven communities are each receiving $10,000, and 11 seniors’ organizations are receiving grants ranging from $4,000 to $10,000.
