Age-Friendly Grants to Benefit Carbonear and Whiteway
Seniors will benefit from initiatives that encourage healthy aging as the Provincial Government continues to invest in the Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Grants Program. The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services and Minister Responsible for Aging and Seniors, announced today that the Town of Carbonear and the Whiteway Fifty-Plus Club will receive grant funding.
“The Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Grants Program is one initiative of the Provincial Healthy Aging Policy Framework,” said Minister Sullivan. “The framework’s vision is for individuals, families, communities and society as a whole to foster healthy aging in order to achieve optimal health and well-being. The projects funded through this grants program will support seniors as they continue to lead active lives.”
The Town of Carbonear is receiving $10,000 to conduct a community assessment. A committee will evaluate community resources and assets, and work to develop an action plan that will foster the growth of an age-friendly community.
“I am very pleased that the Town of Carbonear will avail of this funding to evaluate existing programs and enhance services for seniors in the community,” said the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Natural Resources and MHA for Carbonear-Harbour Grace. “Our government has made healthy aging a priority and continues to put the supports in place to help keep people active and healthy later in life.”
The Whiteway Fifty-Plus Club is receiving $8,000 to enhance social activity offerings for older people in the community. The group will offer computer training, physical activities, and health and wellness education initiatives.
"Our government is pleased to help groups such as the Whiteway Fifty-Plus Club provide members with the opportunity to get involved with their community," said the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services and MHA for Trinity - Bay de Verde. "Through this investment, the club and its members will continue to reap the benefits of participating in social, educational and active programming."
In total, seven communities and 11 seniors’ organizations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador will receive $160,000 in Provincial Government funding through the Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Grants Program.
