Construction to Start on Youth Treatment Centre in Paradise

Services for youth in the province with complex mental health needs will be further enhanced with the construction of the Paradise youth treatment centre. Eastern Contracting Ltd has been awarded a contract worth $10.3 million by the Provincial Government to build the facility.

The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services, was joined by the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works; the Honourable Paul Davis, Minister of Service NL and MHA for Topsail; Steve Kent, MHA for Mount Pearl North; David Brazil, MHA for Conception Bay East - Bell Island; Beverley Clarke, Vice President, Eastern Health: and, Ralph Wiseman, Mayor of Paradise, for a groundbreaking ceremony on the site of the new Paradise youth treatment facility.

“Our government is committed to ensuring that youth with mental health and addictions issues are able to access treatment as close to home as possible,” said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services. “The facility in Paradise for youth with complex mental health needs and the facility in Grand Falls-Windsor for youth with addictions will be the first of their kind in Newfoundland and Labrador. We will continue to invest in mental health and addictions to ensure that individuals have access to services throughout our province.”

The contract is for the construction of a single story, 2,065 square metre, 12-bed centre. The design and layout of the treatment centre includes three separate living quarters containing four bedrooms with private bathrooms, a kitchen and a lounge area, a school area, a multipurpose room, a physical fitness room and a dedicated space for overnight stays for visiting family.

“We will continue to make investments in infrastructure to enable the delivery of enhanced health care services for the people of the province,” said Minister Hedderson. “The construction of the youth treatment facilities in Paradise and Grand Falls-Windsor will build upon the new health care infrastructure being built throughout the province.”

Previous tenders for the site development included demolition of the former Paradise Elementary School, the abatement and disposal of hazardous materials, and backfilling to level the site with materials suitable for further construction.

“The services offered at this facility will allow youth who are affected by complex mental health issues to remain in the province to get the treatment they need,” said Minister Davis. “I have seen firsthand how such illnesses can impact the lives of individuals and families. The Town of Paradise and the entire province will benefit from the addition of this youth treatment centre.”

Last week, a $10.6 million contract for the construction of the treatment centre in Grand Falls-Windsor for youth with addictions was awarded to Bluebird Investments Ltd.

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity - Responsible Investments for a Secure Future allocated $15.5 million for the continued development of the youth treatment centres in Paradise and Grand Falls-Windsor and the adult treatment centre in Harbour Grace. Over the past three years, the Provincial Government has invested approximately $29 million to support mental health and addictions throughout the province.
