Contributions Support Health Care Fundraising Initiatives
Throughout Newfoundland and Labrador

The work carried out by provincial health care foundations plays an important and significant role in supporting patient care throughout the province. The Provincial Government acknowledges the contributions made by health care foundations and has invested approximately $858,000 in the past year to support their initiatives.

“Our government recognizes the extraordinary commitment demonstrated by the health care foundations in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services. “These foundations continue to support patient care through their fundraising efforts for medical equipment and other innovative health programs. We are pleased to continue to invest in these organizations as they work to improve health care services for the residents of Newfoundland and Labrador.”

In 2011-12, the Provincial Government allocated funding to various health care foundations throughout the province to enhance their ongoing fundraising efforts. Recent investments include:

• The Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation which received $100,000 towards the establishment of a Learning Lounge for Cancer Care. This space will enable oncology professionals to access leading edge technology on demand, supporting an array of social and collaborative learning activities;
• The South and Central Health Foundation which received $50,000 towards the purchase of a Sentinel Node Detector, six specialized mattresses for stroke patients, six otoscopes/opthalmoscopes, and six air pressurized mattresses for the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre in Grand Falls-Windsor; and,
• The Central Northeast Health Foundation which received $50,000 towards the establishment of a patient healing garden at James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre in Gander.

“Provincial Government funding is complemented by the successful fundraising efforts of health care foundations,” said Minister Sullivan. “Together, we are committed to providing access to quality health care throughout the province and these investments will support program delivery and build on our regional health care infrastructure.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador included an investment of $272.2 million to enhance health care infrastructure throughout the province. This funding includes $200.6 million for new and continuing construction and redevelopment; $50 million for new equipment; and, $21.6 million for repairs and renovations.
