Contract Awarded for Carbonear Long-Term Care Facility

A contract for the construction of the main building of the new Carbonear long-term care facility, worth approximately $73.7 million, has recently been awarded to Ellis Don Corporation Limited.

“Our government has made a commitment to enhance long-term care throughout the province,” said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services. “The long-term care facility in Carbonear is one of several investments our government has made to improve and modernize long-term care infrastructure throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. This new facility will complement the two new long-term care facilities in Corner Brook and Happy Valley-Goose Bay, and the facilities in St. John’s and Lewisporte currently under development.”

The latest contract for the Carbonear long-term care facility includes the development of the main building, which will consist of an 18,500 square metre four storey residence, and will include space for recreation therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and spirituality. The new facility will be located on the existing Carbonear General Hospital site and completion is projected for late 2014.

“This long-term care facility is an important piece of health care infrastructure for this region and the future delivery of long-term care services,” said the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Natural Resources and MHA for Carbonear - Harbour Grace. “I am pleased to see this project moving forward. The development of this facility is a strong indicator of the value our government places on advancing and strengthening health care services in this region.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity, For Our Future, For Newfoundland and Labrador furthered the Provincial Government’s commitment of advancing health infrastructure with a total investment of $272.2 million, which includes $200.6 million for new and continuing construction and redevelopment projects, $50 million for new equipment and $21.6 million for repairs and renovations.
