Ovations to Celebrate Women of Newfoundland and Labrador
The Women’s Policy Office, working with the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women, is pleased to announce details of Ovations: Applauding Accomplishments of Women in Our Communities to be held January 17, 2013.
Ovations will bring together individuals from across the province to recognize the past and present contributions of women in Newfoundland and Labrador as well as focus on their futures.
“The history of the province has shaped the character of Newfoundland and Labrador women. They are resilient, adaptable, skilled and committed,” said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. “This event will shine a well-deserved spotlight on the women who make a valuable contribution each and every day.”
The highlight of the event will be an evening celebration of women, presented by Premier Dunderdale and hosted by actress Krystin Pellerin from the television series Republic of Doyle. It will include a keynote address by the Premier, as well as a series of entertaining and inspiring performances.
“Ovations is a great opportunity for women from all over the province, regardless of background, to come together to celebrate achievements and accomplishments,” said the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women. “Newfoundland and Labrador women make a difference at home, at work and in the community. The Premier and I both look forward to taking part in this inaugural event.”
The event will begin with an afternoon forum, which will feature keynote speaker Zoe Yujnovich, President and CEO of the Iron Ore Company of Canada. Panellists will include women from across the province who will share their insights and experiences, whether as a chair on a corporate board, as a community volunteer or as a young woman reaching out to her community and humanity around the world.
“As a senior leader in a global mining company, I have seen first-hand the valuable contributions women have made in their homes, workplaces and communities,” said Ms. Yujnovich. “The Iron Ore Company of Canada is proud of the partnering we have done within Newfoundland and Labrador to promote diversity and look forward to sharing successes and learnings as this event highlights the many achievements of the women of this province.”
Ovations is being organized by a committee of representatives from the Women’s Policy Office, the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women, the Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs and women from business and community.
“Women in Newfoundland and Labrador have come a long way since the suffrage years and although we still have work ahead of us, it is time to celebrate what has been accomplished,” says Linda Ross, President/CEO of the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women. “This event recognizes and celebrates the many women in our province and the tireless work they do in our communities.”
