Awards Ceremony Highlights the Importance of Philanthropy

Celebrated across Canada, National Philanthropy Day is a time to recognize and honour individuals and organizations for their generous donations to charities and for outstanding fundraising activities.

Tony Cornect, Parliamentary Assistant to the Premier, participated in the Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals annual awards luncheon on behalf of the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development and Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement. The event was held today at the Capital Hotel in St. John’s.

“Philanthropy plays an important role in the lives of everyone in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Minister Hutchings. “It creates a better society and leads to greater social and economic change. I would like to thank all those who give of themselves, whether it is through monetary or voluntary donations. Every contribution, large and small, makes a difference.”

At today’s event, three awards were presented recognizing the outstanding contributions of local philanthropists. Dave Walsh was awarded the Rising Star Award; Rose Daley received the award for Outstanding Fundraising Executive; and Debbie, Anna and Juleah Patten were named Outstanding Philanthropists.

“Canadians place great value on philanthropy and the fundraising professionals who honour them and have pledged to protect their intentions,” said Edie Newton, President, Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter Association of Fundraising Professionals. “It is wonderful to have Mr. Cornect present to help us celebrate our first official National Philanthropy Day.”

The Association of Fundraising Professionals is the professional association of individuals responsible for generating philanthropic support for a wide variety of charitable organizations. The group represents more than 30,000 members in 200 chapters throughout the world, working to advance philanthropy through advocacy, research, education and certification programs.
