Minister Congratulates New Chief of Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation

The Honourable Felix Collins, Minister for Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Affairs, officially congratulated Andrew Penashue today as the newly elected Chief of the Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation.

“This represents a new chapter for the Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation,” said Minister Collins. “I am very pleased to congratulate Chief Penashue and I look forward to working with him and his team to address areas of shared priorities.”

There are approximately 1,700 Innu in Sheshatshiu and 900 Mushuau Innu in Natuashish who are members of the Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation and Mushuau Innu First Nation respectively. Although the two communities are distinct from one another, they share a common organization, the Innu Nation, which represents them in land claims and other negotiations.

“Our government has worked in partnership with the Innu and we will continue to work together to ensure that the interests of the Labrador Innu are respected,” said Minister Collins. “The Provincial Government continues to work with the Government of Canada and the Innu Nation on the implementation of the New Dawn Agreements and on social priorities through the Innu Healing Table.”
