Minister Congratulates Grand Chief of Innu Nation

The Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister for Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs, today congratulated Prote Poker as the newly elected Grand Chief for the Innu Nation of Labrador.

“I am pleased to congratulate Grand Chief Poker and his elected Deputy Grand Chief Jeremy Andrew,” said Minister McGrath. “I look forward to working with Grand Chief Poker and his team as we continue to work together with the Innu Nation representing all Labrador Innu.”

The Provincial Government, the Government of Canada and the Innu Nation signed a trio of documents on November 18, 2011. The Land Claim and Self-Government Agreement-in-Principle, the Upper Churchill Redress Agreement and the Lower Churchill Innu Impact and Benefits Agreement, collectively, have become known as Tshash Petapen or the New Dawn Agreements. The benefits from these agreements provide the Innu an enhanced capacity to take responsibility for their own future and to provide for the health and well-being of their society.

“The Provincial Government continues to work with the Federal Government and the Innu Nation on the implementation of the New Dawn Agreements,” said Minister McGrath. “We are all committed to working together to ensure a prosperous future for the Innu of Labrador.”
