Premier Expresses Condolences on the Passing of Dr. Nigel Rusted

The Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today expressed condolences on the passing of well-known and respected Newfoundland and Labrador physician, Dr. Nigel Rusted.

β€œI was saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Rusted. On behalf of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, I offer my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones,” said Premier Dunderdale. β€œAt 104 years of age, Dr. Rusted leaves a rich legacy of a long career dedicated to a profession he loved and the innumerable lives he touched with his pioneering surgeries and treatments. We are grateful for his passion and commitment, not only to his profession but to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Born in 1907 in Salvage, Dr. Nigel Rusted was renowned for his distinguished medical career. His career began during the summers of 1930 and 1931 as a medical student onboard the S. S. Kyle. He was the first health officer to travel along the coast of Labrador.

Dr. Rusted was awarded the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador in 2007 and the Order of Canada in 2011.
