Women Get Closer to Nature in October

Women in Newfoundland and Labrador will have an opportunity next month to obtain skills and knowledge to assist them in pursuing outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, hiking, backpacking and nature photography. Sponsored by the Department of Environment and Conservation, the Becoming an Outdoors Woman program will take place at the Lion Max Simms Memorial Camp near Bishop’s Falls from October 12 to 14.

“For 15 years, this program has encouraged women in our province to engage in outdoor pursuits and connect with nature and wildlife,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Environment and Conservation. “Many of the women who participate in this program will take their skills and confidence beyond the workshops to engage in salmon fishing, moose and caribou hunting, and backcountry hiking. This program will provide an opportunity for the participants to join other members of their family in outdoor activities and make activities such as hunting and fishing a family event.”

The program begins noon on Friday and ends with lunch at noon on Sunday. The registration cost is $225.00 and includes all meals, accommodations, and instruction materials. Participants must be 18 years of age to register. Although the program is geared towards women, men are also welcome to participate.

For information on registration, please visit www.gov.nl.ca/env/snp/programs/education/outdoor_woman.html, e-mail brendapike@gov.nl.ca, or call 709-229-7888.

All courses offered in the Becoming an Outdoors Woman program are taught at an introductory level.

“As a hunter, I know firsthand the enjoyment of participating in our natural environment,” said Minister French. “I encourage women to take advantage of this opportunity if possible, and learn skills that will help them enjoy traditional activities in our beautiful outdoors.”
