Remote Recreational Cottage Lots Available in Western Newfoundland

A remote area in western Newfoundland will be made available for recreational cottage lots through a public draw process. The 50 Crown land cottage lots are located in the Rocky Harbour enclave area.

“Crown land is truly one of our most valuable resources and our government will continue to ensure the people of the province have fair access to cottage lots through our public draw system,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Environment and Conservation. “It is important that we manage Crown land wisely while, at the same time, allowing those who are successful in the public draw process to develop cottage lots in a safe and environmentally-sound manner.”

Individuals interested in obtaining a lot must submit a public draw entry form to the Western Regional Lands Office located in Corner Brook before 3:45 p.m. on Friday, September 14, 2012. Entry forms received after the deadline will not be eligible. The lots will be issued as a Licence to Occupy with a current annual rental of $100 and a condition that the Licence to Occupy must be renewed every five years. Forms may be obtained from the aforementioned office or from the departmental website at: www.env.gov.nl.ca/env

The public draw will be held 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 27, 2012, at the Western Regional Lands Office, Ground Floor, Sir Richard Squires Building, Mount Bernard Avenue, Corner Brook, to determine applicant selection order for the lots through a random draw process. Applicants may attend this meeting, but attendance is not necessary. Following the random draw, the list will be posted on the department’s website and at Crown Lands offices at 11:00 a.m. on the same day. It is the responsibility of entrants to check for their ranking in the draw, as draw entrants will not be contacted. The list will not display any personal contact information.

The selection of lots will take place at a public meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 11, 2012, at the Fisherman’s Landing Inn, Rocky Harbour and attendance by draw entrants or their designated proxy representative is required. An application fee of $100 plus $13 HST and a $200 document processing fee must be paid at the time a lot is selected. The non-refundable fees will be charged towards the cost of processing the application and preparing title documents. Applicants are advised to inspect lots prior to the selection meeting. Any lots remaining after the lot selection meeting will be offered to the public on a first-come, first-served basis on the next business day.
