Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Poole Cove Marine Industrial Park                              (Reg. 1645)
Proponent: Town of Harbour Breton

The Town of Harbour Breton proposes to develop a marine industrial park at Poole Cove to support the growing aquaculture industry in the region. The marine industrial park will be approximately three hectares in size and include the construction of a 2.5 kilometre access road and wharf, installation of a three-phase electrical service, water and sewer services and a sewage treatment plant. Several building lots will be cleared for potential tenants. Construction at the site is scheduled to begin in June 2012.

The undertaking was registered on April 20, 2012; the deadline for public comments is May 29, 2012; and the minister’s decision is due by June 2, 2012.

Labrador West Mineral Exploration Roads Project      (Reg. 1644)
Proponent: Iron Ore Company of Canada

The proponent has submitted a proposal to construct 34 kilometres of roads in western Labrador in order to facilitate diamond drilling of potentially economic iron ore bodies. The work will consist of expanding existing trails into roads, new road construction, development of four borrow pits and the installation of culverts and bridges across 14-15 streams. The proponent has indicated that an Environmental Protection Plan will be submitted that considers all aspects of road construction activities as well as all activities associated with the subsequent drilling and exploration program. Road construction is scheduled to be completed during 2012-13.
