Nominations Being Accepted for the Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Awards

Nominations are now being accepted for the 23rd Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Awards. The awards recognize and celebrate individuals, community groups and businesses for their outstanding efforts and dedication to protect and enhance the environment.

“Our government understands the significant impact that individuals, businesses and community groups have in sustaining, protecting and enhancing Newfoundland and Labrador’s environment,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Environment and Conservation. “It is important that we celebrate and acknowledge these environmental contributions. We encourage residents of Newfoundland and Labrador to nominate an individual or group who they believe has made a difference and demonstrated environmental stewardship in our province.”

To be eligible for an award, a nominated individual, group or business must operate or reside within the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Nominations submitted last year will be reviewed again this year at the request of the nominator.

Further information on the program, including the nomination form and guidelines, is available at www.gov.nl.ca/env/ or by calling 709-729-5783. The deadline for the receipt of nominations is May 1, 2012. A selection committee will review the nominations and provide recommendations to the Minister of Environment and Conservation.

The environmental awards ceremony will take place during Environment Week in June and will honour award recipients in six categories. The winner in each category will receive a $1,000 honorarium from the Multi Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB) to be used to continue their environmental project.

The Environmental Awards Program is a joint initiative sponsored by the Department of Environment and Conservation, the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board and the Newfoundland and Labrador Women’s Institutes.
